Top 10 Movies of 2010

Welcome to my new blog!
I thought I'd start the new year with a new blog and a round up of my favorite films of 2010!
Enjoy and please leave your comments!
Living in the UK we haven't really had any of the big award contenders yet like, 127 Hours, Black Swan and The Kings Speech. So this list will contain films that opened IN THE UK in 2010.

10. Monsters

Monsters, the heartwarming road film with the premise of post - apocalyptic America. The daughter of  US politician must cross 'The Infected Zone' fro Mexico to the USA. With the help of cynical photographer Andrew (Scoot McNairy). Director Gareth Edwards and his cast do of a wonderful job of creating a frightening and touching world where monsters very much DO exist.

9. GravyTrain

GravyTrain is a Canadian comedy Directed By April Mullen and starring April Mullen, Tim Doiron and Tim Meadows. Now these 3 may not be household names, but they are beginning to impress critics on the festival circuit. In 2007 they bought us 'Rock, Paper, Scissors. The Way of The Tosser.' And in 2010 they bring us GravyTrain the story of the fictitious town of Gypsy Creek where Charles GravyTrain the towns #1 cop is hunting down a serial murderer they call 'Fish'. GravyTrain delivers classic slapstick humour and April Mullen in a jumpsuit... What more do you want?

8. Daybreakers

An interesting movie that may have been forgotten about by most. It's been a year since we were blessed with this futuristic vampire drama. It's set in the year 2019 and a plague has turned most of the human race into vampires, leaving only a small group of humans still living. Facing a shortage in the blood supply the new dominant race plans their survival. With a few stars on the cast list and a strong story, Daybreakers holds up against the years horror movies for scaring the crap out of me! Except, this was well scripted and didn't take an hour to get started. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2!

7. Unstoppable

Hey! Don't judge me yet. Unstoppable is a good movie. Solid story, great acting, action packed and it kept me entertained for just under 2 hours. Tony Scott is very much a love him or hate him kind of director. We'll remove The Taking Of Pelham from the picture and say that the majority of his films are solid. And lets face it, I haven't seen Ridley on any top 10 lists yet. So if he gets one thing from 2010 let it be this, He made a better film than his brother.

6. Scott Pilgrim VS The World.

Scott Pilgrim might not be to every ones tastes but I loved it. Yet another fantastic achievement for Shaun Of The Dead director Edgar Wright. As a fan of the graphic novels I was very excited to see Scott Pilgrim for a long time and it did not disappoint. I got exactly what I was expecting, a fun, action packed movie that delivered on an emotional and comedic level. OK so it didn't make the most money at the box office and your parents probably won't like it. But hey that's even more reason to buy it! Get out there and get this film, you will more than get your moneys worth because this movie gets better the more and more I watch it!

5. Buried

Buried, the story of Paul Conroy a driver for the US military. When Paul's convoy is attacked by a group of extremists he wakes up to find himself Buried in a coffin with only a blackberry phone (a bit of cheeky product placement?) And a lighter to help him survive. This is THE movie for fans of suspense as it is truly mesmerizing. I have never bitten my nails more during a movie, and I'm not just saying that. Ryan Reynolds is magnificent and the final product is phenomenal. Hats off.

4. Toy Story 3

Upon constructing my top 10 films of last year, I was certain Toy Story would be in my top 3... Then I started my list. Although absolutely phenomenal, there were better films this year. A film that breaks the rule of the trilogy, need i explain? OK, Spiderman 3, Shrek The Third, The Mummy! You get the idea. Another fantastic achievement for Pixar, Toy Story 3 is a must own for DVD or Blu Ray and is fantastic for people of all ages. You will see no spoilers here but if you haven't seen it... Bring tissues.

3. Inception

Christopher Nolan's Inception was a masterpiece, pure and simple. It may have had problems but it stands strong at number 3. I think this the best visual film of the year and the best directed film of the year. I have no issues with Inception and the only reason it's at number 3 is because i enjoyed the next two a little more. Do we not all know the plot for Inception? OK, Cobb (Leonardo Di Caprio) is a dream extractor. His job is to enter peoples dreams and find out their most kept secrets through the art of extraction. He is approached by a business man who promises him a life back with his children. If he performs the hardest thing for someone in his field of work: Inception.

2. The Town

The latest page in the book of Ben Affleck is just so good! The Town is the story Doug Macray (Affleck), a master of bank robbery. As he is planning his next job he comes into contact with a bank manager from a previous robbery of his. Whilst trying to juggle his feelings for her he plans his next heist deals with the FBI agent who is trying to bring down him and his crew. With stunning performances from all involved, great action sequences and cinematography that can't be flawed The Town sits solidly at #2. Ben, if you want to take another 3 years off, feel free on one condition. Write another great movie!

1. Shutter Island

Twist... After twist... After twist. Shutter Island reminds me of everything I love about Martin Scorsese. Set in the 50's, Shutter Island is the story of Teddy Daniels (Di Caprio), a US Marshall who is sent to a mental hospital for the criminally insane after a prisoner presumably escapes. Will he find the missing prisoner?
Shutter Island is simply phenomenal, an absolute joy to watch. The reason it sits at #1 on this countdown is  not only because it's the best movie of the year (That's a given), but because the cinematography is beautiful, the acting is breathtaking and it's an absolute thrill ride. Outstanding performances from Di Caprio, Sir Ben Kingsley and all others involved. We need more movies like Shutter Island!
